At 792 sq. ft. finished living space, the Retreat has for many decades been the entry model in the range of Satterwhite published floor plans. Though the phrase “tiny homes” carries no specific definition, most people consider anything more than 500 sq. ft. to be beyond the range, and some limit discussion of tiny homes to sizes between 100 and 400 sq. ft.
We have chosen to classify the Retreat as part of our Compact Cabin series in recognition of its longstanding place at the beginning of the Satterwhite plan book. These days, as small homes have gained in popularity, you will find several other options among the Satterwhite standard floor plans that are smaller than the Retreat. What remains true about the Retreat, however, is that there is no loft, and thus this is a small home that can potentially be built with flat interior ceilings with an attic space above.
As currently updated and shown here, this plan calls for a vaulted ceiling over the entire interior space, something made possible by modern spray foam insulation, which eliminates the need for ventilated attics and conventional insulation. While not qualifying for any strict application of being a “tiny house,” the Retreat is certainly a compact and economical cabin which many people continue to find perfect for their needs and budget.
